We analyzed 10,000 trademark applications. Here's what you need to know

10,646 trademark applications were filed with the Indian Trademark Registry in June 2026, according to our tracking of the official IP India journal and registry data.

Pharma and Retail keep the top two spots — again

For the third consecutive month, the same two NICE classes have topped the filing charts:

Rank Class June 2026 May 2026 April 2026
1 Class 5 — Pharmaceuticals 1,270 (11.9%) 1,918 (13.1%) 1,634 (12.6%)
2 Class 35 — Business & Retail Services 1,211 (11.4%) 1,665 (11.4%) 1,530 (11.8%)
3 Class 25 — Clothing & Footwear 714 (6.7%) 978 (6.7%) 796 (6.1%)
4 Class 30 — Food (Staples) 652 (6.1%) 852 (5.8%) 760 (5.8%)
5 Class 3 — Cosmetics & Cleaning 624 (5.9%) 878 (6.0%) 745 (5.7%)

Together, Pharma and Retail Services account for roughly 23% of every trademark filed in India — a share that's barely moved across three months of otherwise volatile total volume. That consistency is the real story: whatever's driving overall filing counts up or down, the composition of what's being branded is settled. If you're filing in Class 5 or 35, you're filing into the most contested classes in the country.

One class worth watching at the margin: Class 36 (Financial & Insurance Services) bounced in and out of the top 12 — present in April (294 filings) and June (225), absent in May, where Class 44 (Medical & Veterinary) took its place instead. That's a sign the classes ranked 10–14 are close enough in volume that small swings reorder them month to month.

Geography: the same four states, ~50% of the country

Filing activity is heavily concentrated, and the concentration is stable:

Rank State June 2026
1 Maharashtra 1,825 (17.8%)
2 Delhi 1,211 (11.8%)
3 Gujarat 1,180 (11.5%)
4 Uttar Pradesh 962 (9.4%)
5 Haryana 694 (6.8%)
6 Karnataka 628 (6.1%)

Maharashtra, Delhi, Gujarat, and Uttar Pradesh have held the exact same 1–2–3–4 order for three consecutive months, together accounting for just over 50% of all filings nationally. If your brand is registering out of a metro in one of these four states, you're filing alongside roughly half the country's applicant pool — expect more prior-mark conflicts in searches.

Further down the table, Kerala (412 filings, 4.0%) displaced Punjab out of the state top-12 in June — Punjab had held a top-12 spot in both April (406) and May (565). Small shift, but a real, checkable one — not the kind of detail a generic "how to file a trademark in India" article would ever have.

Logos are outfiling plain-text names, 57/43

Of June's filings, 56.6% were Imagemarks (5,800) — logos, stylized marks, device marks — versus 43.4% wordmarks (4,446). That split has been nearly identical for three months running (56.9% / 57.0% / 56.6% imagemark share in April, May, June). If you're deciding whether to register your brand name as plain text or as a designed logo, the market is already voting: most new applicants are filing a visual mark, not just a name.

What this means if you're filing ?

  • Class 5 and Class 35 are the most crowded classes in the country — budget extra time for a thorough prior-mark search if your goods or services fall there.
  • Filing from Maharashtra, Delhi, Gujarat, or UP puts you in the busiest applicant pool — again, more reason to search before you file, not after.
  • Most applicants are registering a logo, not just a name — if you haven't finalized your visual identity, that's worth doing before you file rather than after.
